As the majority of the county, if not the entire state area knows, Kennedy-Kenrick Catholic High School will be closing this coming year. The last graduating class out of the school building on Arch Street and East Johnson Highway in Norristown, will be this final class of 2010.
Archbishop Kennedy High School in Conshohocken, and Bishop Kenrick in Norristown, were great rivals throughout the years. Whenever a rival game was going on, sparks were flying left and right throughout the games. It was obvious that merging these two school would be difficult, but it was possible. When the schools merged and opened their doors in 1993, students were furious and distanced themselves from their still rival school students.
Since 1993, Kennedy and Kenrick students have grown closer together and the enrollment grew. After one rivalry was extinguished mostly, another was set and soon a rivalry between Norristown High School and Kennedy-Kenrick High School grew tremendously. It was all about the turf and who would have control over it. To this day, the Norristown K-K rivalry is still strong and relevant each year in the sports division. Each sport has something to prove, and this year was no different. Jumping directly to K-K field hockey, which I am a part of and have been since my freshman year, pre-season is just a warm-up for the Norristown game. Norristown somehow always come on top when competing against K-K, but last year was different because we beat Norristown 3-2. This year however, after losing seven previous seniors, K-K still went out to win the rivalry game we always look forward to. Now on Norristown's field, we Wolverine's wanted to go out against Norristown in a bang and leave our mark on the field, which we did in a 5-1 victory. Not only was the game intense, as it always is, but it was also the game which showed that despite losing players the team clicked and made up for its loses. This year six returning seniors, and a new one, come together extremely well. The entire team meshes and connects while still having fun. This year will be better than the last, and thanks to a great victory over our rival Norristown, we know we'll be making this last season in K-K history the greatest and leaving our mark on every one's fields.
